East London Area Guide

One of the most popular areas in the city, East London is the perfect place for those who can’t imagine living without some of the best restaurants, markets, open spaces, historic houses and museums just around the corner. With a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere, the hippest part of London is home to some amazing tourist attractions, including street art, awesome entertainment venues, such as the O2 Arena, and, of course, the City’s finance district. Home to some great gastropubs and the legendary East End markets, if you enjoy good food, you definitely won’t be let down in this area.

“That part beyond the Tower '' was the first mention of the East End, the old core of modern East London, and it originates from John Strype’s 1720 Survey of London. The area began during the medieval development of London beyond the city wall along the River Thames and the Roman roads that connected Aldgate and Bishopsgate.

When London became more industrialised, the region turned into a hub of small manufacturers, many of which were creating noxious products that would have otherwise affected the city centre with their fumes. Because of its history, the East End of London is known as the real London, while the East Enders, known as Cockneys, are considered by many people as the real Londoners.

But much of this is ancient history, and over the last few years, East London has become an incredible place to live and work, offering exciting new residential developments, such as London City Island, a brand new neighbourhood development inspired by the architecture of Chicago and Tokyo, located very close to the business centre of Canary Wharf. The region is well connected by Tube, bus routes, rail and DLR links to any other part of the city, and it’s only few minutes from St Pancras International station which connects it to Europe.

The 2012 Olympic Games were held here and the residents now enjoy its legacy in the form of the superb Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, a 2.5 square kilometre park that embraces the Olympic Stadium, the London Aquatic Centre, the Lee Valley Velopark and many other sport facilities that are open to the public.

East London is formed by the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Barking And Dagenham, Newham and Havering on the banks of the river and Hackney, Waltham Forest and Redbridge to the north. It is estimated that there are approximately 1.1 million people living in this part of the city, with 2.67 people per household, according to Census 2011.

There is an eclectic mix of property in this area, ranging from historical Victorian and Georgian architecture to modern and luxurious flats. Stratford, Bethnal Green and Canary Wharf are the most popular locations for those looking to rent a flat in East London, while Bow, Barking and Wapping are among the most desirable places for new buyers.
